The Style

Style is the applied side of dressing — what the garments actually do together. Three things often get conflated when people talk about how someone dresses, and the articles below separate them before zooming in.

• Dress codes — rules imposed by an institution or an occasion (business formal, black tie, "smart casual" on an invitation). You are told what to wear.
• Styles — aesthetics chosen by the wearer (preppy, minimalist, gorpcore).
• Informal uniforms — signalling patterns tied to a profession, subculture, or geography. Not codified, but insiders know: the Patagonia vest on Wall Street, the grey T-shirt in Silicon Valley, the tweed blazer in academia.
