Modern menswear has a sharp pivot point: the Great Male Renunciation of the late 18th century, when European men collectively dropped colour and ornament for dark wool tailoring. Almost everything in today’s wardrobe — the suit, the dress shirt, the dark palette of black, navy, and charcoal — descends from that single shift. This page traces the path from there to the spectrum we have today.
